We’ve been looking forward to this all year: our annual visit to Macy’s to see Santa Claus. I’ve been bringing my kids to Macy’s since Lauren was 11 months old, making it 6 years running. And although there are plenty of options to see Santa in New York, you can’t beat this production. It’s over the top, from the life-sized toy trains, to the Nutcracker dancing bears. So each year, we brave the crowds and head up to 34th Street to experience a little Christmas miracle of our own.
Sam was pensive before our visit.
ME: What’s up?
SAM: Are we going to Santa’s office?
ME: Yes.
SAM: Is Santa mad at me?
ME: Why are you asking that?
SAM: Because you were mad at me yesterday.
ME: Why did I get mad at you?
SAM: Because I was sitting on Emma.
ME: Santa probably wouldn’t like that. But I don’t think he’s going to be mad at you. What are you going to ask Santa for?
SAM: Transformers.
ME: What else?
SAM: Um, uh, Flashlight Friends?
ME: Is there anything else? I think you had a list, right? Here it is. You listed Transformers, Optimus Prime, Autobot, a Helmet, Thundercracker, Flashlight Friend, and a penguin.
SAM: And chocolate.
ME: Perfect, what do you think he’s going to say?
SAM: Um, I’m mad at you?
After promising that Santa wouldn’t be mad at him, we had a quick lunch at home. Midway through lunch Sam panicked that he’d forgotten to add Pete The Cat to his list. So he found higher ground and yelled to Santa that he also wanted “Pete the Cat Saves Christmas.”
I reminded him that we were heading up to Santa’s office shortly and that he could pass on the message in person.
So we bundled up and hit the road.
A code red emergency arose when we passed our neighborhood mannequin store and Emma had to tell the prop stylist about her new Old Navy cat shoes. Sam likewise wanted her to know about his candy cane.
In all of the excitement around the candy cane, Sam ripped open the wrapper and bit off a chunk, forgetting that he was planning to save the candy cane for Santa.
Matters got worse in the subway station; Sam was horrified when I stepped on the yellow line to take his picture. Lauren was shocked to see a man walk in between the subway cars while we were moving.
But at last we arrived at Macy’s. (Here’s a little behind-the-scenes footage thanks to their floor-to-ceiling mirrors; doesn’t it look like I’m floating above my boots? It’s like Halloween meets Christmas.)
Mrs. Claus was thrilled when Emma told her that she looks just like Maureen O’Hara. She then gave the kids a bear hug and sent them on their merry way.
And merry it was. Traveling through Santaland is almost more fun than seeing the big man himself.
Almost…
Santa will always be the main event. Emma couldn’t contain herself. “Merry Christmas Santa!” she yelled as the family ahead of us finished up.
And for the first time ever, my own little Christmas wish came true: not a tear in sight.
Even when this happened:
Poor guy. I would have been likewise confused if a shiny ball had been waved in my face. But Sam cheered right up when we got back on the subway and he got his very own breakdance performance.
I love New York. Especially during the holidays, there isn’t a place I’d rather be. Magic around every corner.
I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and getting all of their shopping done.

I thoroughly enjoyed those photos I would love to visit New York
Have a seasonaltastic week 😉
Thanks Steve, we had such a good time *mostly* 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
You know it never would have occurred to me that you have to go through so much work to get into the city for something so simple when you live in the city. I take it for granted that I can just hop in my car and go anywhere.
No joke, and we’re only 1-2 subway stops away from Macy’s, depending on the train. It’s hard work getting three little guys up and down all of those stairs with the trains, keeping them together in a busy department store. Which is why 99% of what we do is in our neighborhood, accessible by foot. Thanks for stopping by Robin…
Great pics. There’s no place like New York. Macy’s is magic.
Total magic. Was a fun adventure as usual…
My boys love Pete the Cat too! Great photos as always!
Thanks Amber, we didn’t know about Pete the Cat until this year but the guys are now obsessed 🙂
What an awesome experience! My kids would love to do that.
You guys need to gear up for an NYC holiday soon- so many things to do in December. Your guys would love it! We’re heading to the Rockettes tomorrow, our holiday tradition 🙂
That looks like an adventurous time. It’s been a long time since I’ve been on a subway. I live in Nebraska. No subway here. When I live in Atlanta, it’s all I took to get around.
I’d be in horrible shape without the subway, I depend on that thing! I hate taking taxis and am not fond of driving- I think I’ll be stuck in my little neighborhood for life!
Oh, I have maintained for years that Mrs. Santa Claus does all the work but dear Santa himself, gets all the credit! hmph!
Glad you had a great time. My grandson downed his candy cane like it was going out of style. lol
Isn’t that the case in every family 😉 Thanks for stopping by Renae, hope you had a great week!
Fun post Jess! I love Sam’s hair. Our wish list is pretty close to his. Ho ho ho!
Thanks ML, he asked for a mohawk, he got a modified. I was too scared to do a full shave (as was the hairdresser). Happy holidays to you too, ho ho ho
What a truly fantastic day!
Other than the 90 degree heat in Santaland + layers of winter clothes, it really was perfect 🙂 Thanks for stopping by this week!
Those are some stylish clothes, too! I’m impressed you got no tears at Santa. And I assume Santa *didn’t* say he was mad? Sweet.
Santa was in great spirits, no scolding in sight 😉
I love your photos! Thanks for the chance to win.
Thanks so much Sara, good luck!
I’m not a kid, anymore, but I would just love to visit Macy’s on 34th Street for my very own little Christmas Miracle, too. The decorations and activities abounding the store look awesome. I just love that Santa. He’s a great one! And, Mrs. Claus really looks the part, too. Thanks for sharing your children’s excitement through the eye of the camera with us on WW! Merry Chrismtas!
Christmas in Dillsboro, North Carolina
Of course, thanks for stopping by. Happy holidays 🙂
That was a really sweet Santa story. I particularly liked the “finding higher ground” aspect.
Thanks so much Alison, kids are so sweet, the stories just write themselves don’t they?
What a beautiful story and photos.I am from the south and all these “big city” things are new to me but they surely make Christmas seem more real than here with your subways, cold weather and Santa and Mrs. Claus at the big Macys. Happy Holidays. Thank you for sharing this adventure.
Thanks so much, we love this city especially during the holidays, so many fun things to do. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your southern warm weather holidays. I’m kind of jealous…
Great photos! The conversation with your little guy is adorable. Lilly has been testing us (we think because I’m pregnant & her age) so she has been worried that she’s not on the nice list 😉
I don’t think I knew that you’re pregnant. Congrats! They take the naughty list to heart don’t they? Sam is convinced he’s getting a lump of coal, poor guy. Happy holidays.
We had a similar conversation with the 4yo last night. He’s very concerned that Santa won’t come to our house. We barely averted disaster. I would love to see Christmas in NYC. I can’t imagine hauling my 3 around on a subway, I guess if it was routine part of life…
Merry Christmas!
It’s funny what we get used to. I want to tear my hair out when I have to load the kids into our car and get the strapped into seat belts on the weekends. The subway is a breeze. It’s a pain with a stroller, but once they’re out of that thing you’re golden…Happy holidays!
Found you through SITS! Your kids are cute and looks like they had a great adventure visiting Santa and Mrs. Claus!
Hey Monique, thanks for stopping by. We had an awesome time this year, best year ever. There’s always an issue – crying, someone needs to nap- this year was golden. Happy holidays….
YAY for the Pete the Cat request!
We’re only slightly obsessed with the series, it’s AWESOME!
It all looks so magical and you got to visit the real Santa! not one of those helper Santas that just ress like him. He also visits one of the malls I go to . Some of us are just lucky.
Hey thanks Debbie, it was an awesome visit. They do such a nice production at Macy’s every year. Enjoy the holidays!
I am not on instagram but I did all the others. New york, a place I would love to visit some day! thanks for this giveaway! connie d.
